Are Chinese home batteries safe? How quality has improved and the safety features to look for

"Is it made in China?" is one of the most common questions we hear when we quote a home battery in Sydney. The honest answer is that almost every home battery sold in Australia uses cells made in China, including many premium brands. The better question is how well the battery is engineered, tested and installed. Here's what has changed and what to look for.

Why most batteries come from China

China makes the large majority of the world's lithium battery cells. Companies such as CATL, BYD and EVE supply cells to car makers and energy storage brands around the world. That scale has driven years of investment in automated factories, quality control and research, and it is a big part of why home battery prices have fallen so far.

The shift to LFP chemistry

The biggest safety improvement has been the move to lithium iron phosphate, or LFP. Compared with the nickel based chemistries used in many older batteries, LFP is far more stable at high temperatures and much less prone to thermal runaway, the chain reaction behind battery fires. LFP cells also last longer, typically rated for 6,000 cycles or more, which suits a battery that cycles every day for ten years or more.

Every home battery we install today uses LFP cells.

Better battery management

A modern battery management system (BMS) watches the voltage and temperature of every cell many times a second. If something drifts out of range, it balances the cells, limits charging or shuts the battery down safely. Cloud monitoring means many issues are flagged before you would ever notice them.

Standards and approvals in Australia

Quality brands now test their batteries to international safety standards such as IEC 62619, and installs in Australia must follow AS/NZS 5139, which sets out where a battery can and cannot go on your home. To claim the federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate, the battery must also be on the approved product list and installed by an accredited installer. These rules weed out a lot of the poor quality products that once reached the market.

Safety features in the brands we install

We choose brands with a strong local presence, proper Australian support and a proven safety record.

  • Sigenergy SigenStor: LFP battery packs with cell level monitoring and a built in fire suppression unit in each pack, in an IP66 rated enclosure for indoor or outdoor installs.
  • SAJ EK70 HS5: stackable LFP modules with an integrated hybrid inverter, multi level BMS protection and an IP65 rating, so the whole system sits neatly on one wall.
  • GoodWe Lynx Home: LFP modules with multi level protection, designed to pair with GoodWe hybrid inverters that are widely used across Australia.
  • Sungrow SBR: modular LFP battery from one of the world's largest inverter makers, with cell level monitoring and protection built into every module.
  • Tesla Powerwall 3: LFP cells with a built in solar inverter, liquid thermal management and Tesla's monitoring app.

Check each brand's datasheet for full details, and see our battery range for the models we currently recommend.

Installation matters as much as the battery

Even the best battery can be let down by a poor install. Location, clearances, ventilation, cabling and protection devices all matter. Our own in house teams are accredited and install every battery to AS/NZS 5139, then register it for warranty and set up monitoring so we can keep an eye on it. If you are comparing quotes, read our guide to the real cost of a cheap installer.

The bottom line

Today's Chinese made LFP batteries from established brands are safer, longer lasting and better value than ever. Choose a proven brand, check it is on the approved list, and have it installed by an accredited team that will be around to support it.
